which essential oils to use for your chakras

Let’s chat about a topic that’s hot on eer-body’s lips these days: the chakras. And no, these aren’t just spinning wheels of colour that exist around your body.

They are spinning vortexes that both receive and emit energy. They are, in essence, the way in which we feel into and experience the world of energy and are manifestations of prana or life force energy.

We often get asked about the ways in which you could use your essential oils for your chakras ❤️

As a company that has a strong background in metaphysics and conscious awareness, this question was right up our alley. And so, we have decided to dedicate this lil’ bit of virtual space to understanding which essential oils align with which chakra.

How do essential oils work with the metaphysical body you might ask?

Well, your body is more than just physical cells connected within the tissue. Your body is made up of energy.

Similarly, essential oils are more than just liquid in a bottle.

Each oil carries the unique energetic signature and vibration of the plant that it is extracted from.

So, when you combine the energy of the body with the energy of the plants, a dance happens.

This is how the energy vortexes within the body fall into alignment.

So, let’s dive into how essential oils can benefit your chakras, but let’s not do it in a woo-hoo out there type of manner.

Let’s talk about science, anatomy and energy. It’s all about being grounded in these discussions.

let’s get grounded

So, let’s take a look at which essential oils will help to balance your root chakra. The root chakra, also known as mooladhara, is located at the base of your spine around your pelvic floor.

It is the first chakra of the energy system of the body and is associated with the earth and the colour red. It governs the parasympathetic nervous system, legs, feet, spine, bones and blood, colon, sciatic nerves, as well as some of the sexual organs.

It also plays a role in the health of your adrenal glands, bladder, and teeth. This is your ‘survival chakra’, it is associated with needs. This is the chakra we refer to when we talk about grounding.

It relates to your sense of security, trust, belonging, courage, instinct, the now, generational patterns and tribe. This chakra pulls energy up from the earth and emits energy down towards the earth. It is a rooting process.

Essential oils that help to bring balance and harmony to this chakra include Cedarwood, Sandalwood, Clove, Peppercorn, Vetiver, Cinnamon, Chamomile, Lavender, Patchouli, Myrrh, Juniperberry, Benzoin and Cypress. These are your grounding oils.

sacral chakra

Let’s take a look at the sacral chakra. It is the second chakra in the energetic body and is associated with the colour orange and with water. The traditional name for the sacral chakra is Svadhishthana. It is located in the lower region of your body, about 3cm below your belly button.

It is the centre of passion and personal power. This energetic space is the master generator of your own essence. It is the centre for your personal desire, creativity, sensitivity, and sexual and sensual energy. It speaks to our relationships to other people and to how well we can create with them.

It also governs our capacity to move out of survival and towards pleasure. It is the centre for our personal pleasure and personal purpose, and it governs our sexual organs, kidneys, spleen, womb, lower vertebrae, pelvis, hips, bladder, appendix, large intestine and adrenal glands. Any ailment in these areas suggests that your sacral chakra is out of alignment.

The main thing that causes this area of the body to move out of alignment is people externally controlling us. Secondly, it’s about whether we take that external control and internalize it so that we then control ourselves.

In order to bring balance and harmony to this sacred space within your being, introduce yourself to the vibration of these plants: coriander, sandalwood, cinnamon, ginger, orange, calendula, and fennel.

your personal power

Let’s look at which essential oils are beneficial when it comes to balancing and bringing alignment to the Solar Plexus Chakra. The solar plexus chakra is also known as manipura. It is the third chakra in the energetic body and is associated with the colour red, fire and the sun. It is located in the pit of your stomach, above your navel and where you diaphragm sits. It governs your stomach, liver, gallbladder, kidneys, large intestine, muscular system, adrenal glands, pancreas, diaphragm and skin.  It is the centre of personal power and personal identity.

It is related to personal willpower, ego, the personality, freedom, confidence, proactivity, responsibility, reliability, authenticity, honour and integrity, personal control and personal choice. This chakra converts inertia into movement. When it is out of balance it manifests as anxiety, low self-esteem, controlling behaviour, competition, lack of confidence, insecurity, feeling trapped, lack of integrity, no sense of self, and inauthenticity.

The biggest thing that throws this chakra out of alignment is, yes you guessed it, relationships. If you are feeling like you may be out of balance in these areas of your life, no worries! Nature is here to help. Some of the best oils that can be used to bring balance to the solar plexus include calendula, lemon, fennel, lemongrass, bergamot, chamomile, cinnamon, turmeric and ginger.

the heart of connection

So now let’s take a closer look at our centre for empathy, compassion and connection: the heart chakra. The heart chakra is associated with the colour green and with the air element. The Sanskrit word for the heart chakra is Anahata, which roughly translated means unhurt.

It is located right in the centre of your chest, over your heart. It is the centre point between your physical chakras (the lower three) and your spiritual chakras (the higher three). It is the unifier between spirit and body, because of this it is the one to bring you into integration and wholeness.

The heart is the first organ to manifest physically in the fetus. Love is the central theme of the heart chakra. It is associated with compassion, forgiveness, emotional safety, the absence of fear, gratitude, hope, trust, generosity, joy, kindness and connection. It maintains the truth that we are connected to all that is.

We will never be alone because we are a part of the web that makes up the entire universe. The heart governs the heart, circulatory system, emotional regulation, the lungs, shoulders, arms and hands, breasts and lymphatic system (beginning with the thymus gland).

What many don’t know is that our brains are governed by our hearts. It delivers messages to the brain, which are then followed. This is why at the heart of all mental illness there lies emotional wounding. Hurt that occurs in conjunction with your relationship to other people is what causes this chakra to move out of alignment.

Susanna Marsiglia

It is hurt that causes it to close and healing that causes it to open. Around your heart there is a membrane of fluid called the pericardium. It allows love to flow in and love to flow out. This liquid carries memory, protects and nurtures your heart. Deep emotional wounding affects this fluid, which takes on the vibration of the emotion it is closely inundated with. Oils that vibrate closely with the heart chakra include Rose, Melissa, Neroli, Marjoram, Chamomile, Yarrow and Eucalyptus. Use these oils while placing something warm on your chest – like a hot water bottle. This should stimulate and open your heart chakra.

speaking your truth

The throat chakra is associated with the colour blue and with the element called ether. The Sanskrit word for the throat chakra is Vishuddha. It is located at the base of the neck where the collarbones meet. It is the chakra of purity and truth.

It governs the lymphatic system, the throat, pituitary, thyroid, parathyroid, ears, nose, jaw, neck, mouth, tongue and shoulders. When this chakra is out of alignment you may see physical manifestations in these parts of the body. You may also feel social anxiety, shyness, shamed, toxically poisoned, desperate, unable to speak, or like you’re holding back.

This chakra is all about discovering and expressing your purity and your own unique truth. It is the chakra that governs listening, communication, personal integrity and personal honour. Not thinking, speaking, and living in alignment with your personal truth is the first thing that causes this chakra to move out of alignment.

The second is when others do not recognize and validate your personal truth. Gossiping and complaining can also cause misalignment. Negative thinking, especially doubt, is a strong antagonist for the throat chakra.

So is doing things because you have to and not because you want to. Oils that vibrate closely with the throat chakra include eucalyptus, coriander, fenugreek, borage, peppermint, frankincense.

inner sight and intuition

The Sanskrit name for the third eye chakra is Ajna, which translates to perceive or beyond wisdom. In fact, the phrase ‘your sixth sense’ came from this chakra. It is associated with everything-ness or light.

It is also associated with the colour indigo and it is located at the centre of your forehead. When this chakra is open, you will be able to understand your inner and outer world. This is the chakra that governs clarity, clairvoyance, intuition, self-realization, concentration, astral travel, lucid dreaming, witnessing and the imagination.

It is also the seat of the conscience; it governs our awareness of what is actually happening. It is designed to transcend duality and polarity, and it is a unifying chakra, much like the heart chakra.

This chakra is the doorway through which we are able to expand our awareness so we are no longer limited by individual awareness. It unifies different perspectives, and unifies the right and left hemispheres of the brain. The third eye can dismantle any limiting thoughts and is associated with psychic abilities.

If we were to try and bring our understanding of this chakra into the physical, which is a very basic and limiting way to view this energetic system, then these are the areas it would govern.

The third eye chakra, together with the crown chakra, govern the pineal gland. It also influences the pituitary gland, in conjunction with the throat chakra. It may also influence the hypothalamus, the thymus, the frontal eyes, the sinuses, many parts of the brain, the skull, ears, nose, endocrine system and parasympathetic nervous system.

When it is out of alignment, it may result in seizures, dementia, headaches and migraines, hallucinations, dissociations, confusion, eye problems, hormone imbalances, sleep disturbances, black and white thinking, no sense of direction, prejudices, strokes, brain tumors, paranoia, delusions, anxiety and depression, closed mindedness, denial, skull and hair issues, learning disabilities, loss of a sense of conscience, rigid perspectives, lack of ethics, or mental illnesses.

Some of the best essential oils to help open the third eye include almond, pine, jasmine, juniper, palo santo, tea tree, nutmeg, rosewood, frankincense, myrrh, almost all of the citrus oils, vanilla, galbanum, carrot seed, sandalwood, angelica, clary sage and bay.

seat of consciousness

The Sanskrit word for the crown chakra is Sahasrara and it is located at the crown of your head.

It is the chakra that is most associated with spiritual connection; it is the bridge to the cosmos (even though every chakra is).

It is also our centre of consciousness, higher knowing, highest potential, integration of the whole, becoming living embodiment of higher self, living enlightenment, present moment, meaning, bigger picture, trust, and oneness. Doorway for eternal knowing to stream into our body and consciousness.

There are three things that throw it out of alignment: Secular thinking; disbelief or distrust in spirituality, source energy or the eternal self; and betrayal.

An out of alignment crown chakra could lead to brain cancer, bone cancer, multiple sclerosis, apathy, epilepsy, chronic pain, glandular disorders, sleep dysfunction, lymph system disorders, nervous system disorders, migraines, coma, stroke, mental illness, loneliness, isolation, Alzheimer’s, dementia, Parkinson, amnesia and existential crisis.

Essential oils that help to open the crown chakra include Frankincense, Myrrh, Sage, Juniperberry, and Lavender.
